the Key of Orthanc: la Llave de Orthanc – aunque el nombre en sí usa el singular en SA:3:X:52, 87, todas las referencias posteriores se dan con plural (the keys), y en SA:6:VI:60 se dice específicamente que eran "dos grandes llaves negras muy trabajadas, unidas por una argolla de acero". A lo largo de CI también se habla de "llaves". Remitiéndonos a la historia textual de SA, vemos que en GA:81, 84 se usa el singular en los precedentes de SA:3:X, y en los de SA:6:VI (FTE:87) se usa el plural, pero mencionando ahora "tres llaves negras". Quizás la cuestión no tenga importancia, pero también es posible que se relacione directamente con la evolución misma de la torre (cfr. GA:46-50, FTE:161), si la multiplicidad de llaves corresponde a los accesos de Orthanc: en SA:3:IX:13 se menciona una puerta, y se dice que "era la única entrada a la torre", pero en versiones previas del pasaje se habla de dos puertas: GA:78, FTE:161. Lamentablemente Ch. Tolkien no toca el tema de la cantidad de llaves en la HSA.
